THE BASKETBALL IN LEGHORN: A STORY FROM FAR

In the world the basketball was born back in 1891 when a gym teacher of Canadian origin, a "certain" that James Naismith was teaching at the school Sprignfield YMCA in Massachusetts, asked to find a sport which takes in training baseball players and football in winter. It occurred to him to take a basket of wood and a leather ball, inspired by an old sport in Canada called "Duck on a Rock" and invented basketball.
Leghorn was once part of it with the sport when he landed for the first time in Italy. Here the first line to participate in the first Serie A was that of Guf Livorno (the team of young fascists) who in the early '30s helped create the first Italian side. Leghorn's born was also that Professor Bruno Macchia who organized the very first championship final in Versilia - was the early '40s - and Leghorn were also those referees that legendary over the years allow to imprint true in basketball national movement. People like Folli, Sussi, Fabbri, Bianchi, who even represent Italy in the Olympics. Names rekindle the imagination of those who have white hair.

BUT LOOK WHO HAS PLAYED IN LEGHORN

John Dante Calabria Calabria was born Pottstown (USA), November 8, 1973. Dante Calabria has attended for all 4 years the canonical prestigious university of North Carolina University, had the honor of becoming captain of the Tar Heels in his last season. At the Court of Dean Smith won a NCAA title in 1993 in New Orleans and in the 1994-95 season after being the best shot from three points of the entire NCAA with 49.6%, losing in the semifinals against Arkansas University.
After college he signed with Bini Viaggi Leghorn (European debut), in A-2 (second italin championship), where it makes a good season finishing with almost 16 points per game. Now back in America, first with the Chicago Bulls (where he plays only the McDonald's Open), then in the Continental Basketball Association (the mythical CBA) with the mesh of Fort Wayne. In 1998-1999 he decided to return to play in Europe and goes to play in the French top flight in Dijon where he scored 17.1 points per well (returning to the times of onset European Leghorn). He spent another half year in France, but change the team, it goes to play for Pau Orthez, where he also dispute the Euroleague. In 2000-01 he returned to Italy, signing for Trieste, where he remained for one season, coached by Bogdan Tanjević. Team changes again next year, this time he moved to Spangna, signing for Valencia, Acb, but in January you should stop for an ankle injury. Back in November to play next year, again in Italy, Benetton Treviso, where he remained until March, when he has to return to the U.S. for stay near to family, however Benetton Italy wins the Italian Cup, after which the Benetton also win the Championship. In the 2003-04 season, signing for the Oregon Cantù, which became one of the strengths. With the mesh Cantù scoring 14.1 points per game, the Italian Super Cup in his final against Benetton Treviso. Who would have thought? Former Italian President Carlo Azeglio Ciampi, who was born in Leghorn, besides being a big fan of italian soccer team "Livorno Calcio" as a young man was also a basketball player. In this photo (taken from the book by Alberto tonut) the young Ciampi (highlighted with circle) in the formation of the University of Pisa with the role of playmaker.
